Overview
Orang National Park, affectionately known as 'Mini Kaziranga' or 'Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park', is a compact but wildlife-rich park spanning 78.81 sq km on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River. The park shares similar terrain with Kaziranga - extensive grasslands, water bodies, and riverine habitats. Despite its smaller size, Orang punches above its weight in wildlife density. The park supports a significant population of one-horned rhinoceros, Royal Bengal tigers, wild water buffalo, Asian elephants, and over 200 species of birds. The compact size actually makes wildlife sightings more frequent compared to larger parks. The park's location in the BTC region has benefited from improved conservation efforts. The grasslands are managed through controlled burning, and anti-poaching measures have been strengthened. For visitors, Orang offers an excellent alternative to the more crowded Kaziranga, with similar wildlife and a more intimate safari experience.
